Welcome Remarks
Remarks by the Director, Literacy Aid Uganda - IRENE MONDO

You all ought to be thankful to the almighty and to your parents because you are able to read this. You should be more thankful too if you are a woman or a girl because not many women have made it this far for various reasons. Many women and girls are still very illiterate because some of their parents never valued education. In the traditional African culture, girls were looked at as a source of wealth hence they could be married off at a tender age in exchange for bride price. The few who got a chance of being taken to school never went far due to sexual exploitation, and these ended up as teenage mothers. This in the long run leads to a vicious cycle of illiterate women It is from the women’s cries that Literacy Aid Uganda, (LAU) was founded in October, 2000. Women who had never been to school and needed help in knowing how to read helped bring LAU in existence. These women cited several reasons, such as being abused by their husbands for not knowing how to read write, being cheated in their businesses, not being able to read and interprete their children’s reports, forced to thumb print important documents they could not understand among many others. Therefore, for all the years Literacy Aid Uganda has existed though in the long run we have had a few men join our adult program though the problem of illiteracy among the women and young girls remains our major focus. To address the problem further because there are still parents who still believe that girls should not go to school, we tackle this right from early childhood by advocating for the education of the girl-child. We have taken on some girls at a young age, some of whom we have identified as orphans and those from poor families to our infant School; Eden wonders Nursery and Infant school.
